SURGICAL TREATMENT OF MAJOR DEPRESSION

Image
Depression is a prevalent and often debilitating psychiatric disorder with a 6-month prevalence of approximately 5%. In the United States alone, approximately 20 million people have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives. Depression accounts for the greatest number of missed work days due to illness, with an estimated economic burden of approximately $40 billion per year. When diagnosing depression, a distinction must be made between major depressive disorder (MDD) and major depressive episode (MDE). For the diagnosis of MDE, patients must present at least five of the following symptoms for a minimum of 2 weeks: depressed mood; markedly diminished interest or pleasure or significant apathy; significant change in appetite or weight; insomnia or hypersomnia; psychomotor agitation or retardation; fatigue or loss of energy; feelings of worthlessness, excessive or inappropriate guilt, or loss of self-esteem; indecisiveness or diminished ability to think or concentr...

HEALTH AND DISEASE - FROM A NEW VIEWPOINT!

Image
According to WHO, "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." But how many of us really know what is happening inside? We feel sick, we go to doctor be it allopathic, homeopathic, or ayurvedic practitioner  ; but we go to them to get treated.  But the basic remains the same, be there difference in the treatment modality. Today we'll look health from a different perspective. BIOCHEMICAL BASIS/PERSPECTIVE OF HEALTH -  Samuel Hahnemann, whose genius divined the great importance of inorganic cell salts are remedial agents of a high order, was the first who began thorough investigation into their pathogenic effects and therapeutic uses. It was his provings that Lime and Salt and Potash and Silica when prepared in a specific way leads to treatment of various diseases, but they should be in their crude states apparently. Theory of Schuessler's biochemic method -   The idea upon which bi...

Obesity - A Genetic Predisposition?

Image
Excessive body weight is something much of a concern. Obesity is when a person consumes more calories than the calories he is meant to burn. For simplicity, it means the increase in calorie intake and not burning it sufficiently to maintain your body's energy needs. Obesity is caused because of -  Lack of physical activity Increase in calorie intake Genetic predisposition Recent studies have shown that there is a Genetic predominance in the Population. People who are fat in before the age of 2 and do not fit in the parameters of the growth charts, should take their genetic testing to check for obesity markers. The markers that are used to check for obesity are - Leptin Deficiency POMC Deficiency MC4R Deficiency More commonly, people who have obesity have multiple genes that predispose them to gain excess weight. One such gene is the fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO), which is found in up to 43% of the population. The presence of this gene and other genes can cause: I...

AVM Brain - Arterio-Venous Malformations (of Brain)

Image
An AVM is Arteriovenous Malformation, where there is tangling of the arteries and veins.   The arteries are responsible for carrying out oxygenated blood to various parts of the body from the heart. The Arteries carry blood with high pressure, this is supported by the thick elastic wall present in them which helps to sustain the blood pressure. Whereas veins carry deoxygenated blood back to heart from the body. This is in contrast to the fact that veins don't have to carry blood with pressure, thus the blood flow is sluggish as compared to arterial flow. To support this sluggish blood flow, there are valves present inside veins which prevent backflow of blood. Thus any intertwining of these two blood vessels is problematic. This can occur anywhere in the body, these are very rare in the brain and occur as a result of developmental abnormality majority of the times. A Brain AVM may or may not cause any signs and symptoms. But the signs and symptoms arise when there is rup...

TUBARIAL SALIVARY GLANDS - NEW ORGAN IN THE BODY

Image
The Human Body has 3 pairs of salivary glands located in the body. These are Parotid, Submaxillary and Sublingual. Parotid salivary gland is present on the masseter muscle and can be felt on the surface of the skin of the jaw. Rest of the glands are located a bit deep, but can be palpated. Our body contains a pair of previously overlooked and clinically relevant nasopharyngeal salivary glands, according to new research led by the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the University of Amsterdam. Sparing these newly-identified glands, named the ‘tubarial glands,’ in patients receiving radiotherapy may provide an opportunity to improve their quality of life. There are 2 types of glands in the body, Major and minor. Parotid, submandibular and submaxillary are considered as MAJOR Salivary glands, where as thousands of minor salivary glands are distributed along the nasopharynx and oral mucosa.  These glands produce the saliva required for mastication, swallowing, digestion, tasting an...

APOLIPOPROTEINS - ANTIVIRAL AGENT?

Image
HIV has been a controversial topic in the past few years. But still, there is no vaccine for it. There is a natural tendency for the body to fight against foreign particles which is referred to as immunity. But, how is it that, your body doesn't even try to fight of this virus? Or it does, but it is still not that effective? Let's find out it in this blog. This is a basic structure of HIV virus. All bumpy with lots of receptors. This image shows the detailed inside structure of HIV. The basic thing to note here is that, HIV is a RETROVIRUS belonging to the family called as Lentiviridae. Retrovirus means the virus who can turn RNA into DNA and RNA being the primary genetic material. The enzyme Reverse transcriptase helps in the conversion of the viral RNA into the DNA, which is then added into the Host's DNA to carry out the life cycle. As the Virus enters the body, it has a affinity towards the CD4 cells (a part of White blood cell family). This causes reduction in number ...
